On Friday afternoon I was riding high. It was a big, productive week. I was filled with creative energy, and was sitting down to write.
Then I opened my email.
Be careful of email. If you're up to big things, you need to nurture your creativity. You need to intentionally remove not only distractions but also remove triggers that kill your creativity.
Out of the 89 emails that came in on Friday afternoon, I got one email from a reporter that said, "Kindly remove my name from your list." Yes, I shouldn't let that bother me. But it did. In an instant my passion, creativity, vision disappeared. Poof. Gone.
When's the last time you're creative juices have gotten hijacked by emails from clients, vendors, family or your boss? What are you doing to nurture your creativity?

I totally can relate to this as I'm living in right now. I let email distract me from my creativity all the time even though I know better. In fact, my creativity got sucked from me this morning because of two disturbing emails that I knew were going to be disturbing yet I chose to read them anyway. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteYES, happens to me all the time! I think as woman it comes with the territory to take things to heart. I am working on taking the personal out of my business. They're not saying no to you, Jessica Kizorek, but to your email. LOL! Out of that 1 email you still have hundreds of us baddass business women with you, supporting you!
ReplyDeleteOMG...Jess, that happened to me when I first started my mailing list, but I know it is going to happen. Then when the list grows big, it will happen even more. I don't even get notified anymore when they remove themselves. It will be a good thing when you don't have to look at that anymore, because you will have such a strong following. Keep up the good work...you badass!
ReplyDeleteYou weren't distracted by email (the vehicle). You were distracted by rejection.
ReplyDeleteRejection is a natural part of being a leader. Many will opt out. Get used to it and embrace it, because many more will opt in.
Rather than have this kill your creativity, you should be fueled by it. 89 people cared enough to reach out to you, good or bad. How many non-leaders hear from 89 people in a day?
You can't control what anyone thinks. The ONLY thing you can control is your own thoughts and what you make things mean.
You made this mean something bad and scary. I'd turn it around and make it mean you are creating impact.
Wow! Only 1 out of 89? I think your kicking butt and that is a great ratio! Not everybody gets it! Have a fabulous and badass week! Claudia Lima ;-D
ReplyDeleteI had a boss write me an email at 6am one morning asking me to not use the word "thrilled" in emails, as in "I would be thrilled to partner with you" or "I would be thrilled to meet with you". Talk about squashing my enthusiasm!
ReplyDeleteOMG I thought I was the only one that took that personally. My biggest pet peeve is seeing my creativity in someone elses hands. I see my promo spiels pretty much copied and pasted into other promoters spiels for events that are similar to mine. UUGHHHHH
ReplyDeleteI'd suggest to focus on the positive. Read the other 88 emails and it should supercharge your creativity AND drive.
ReplyDeleteLorraine.
word of wisdom from an older light......
ReplyDeleteif everyone stayed in your circle , no one
would grow a new circle.........teach and release , so they can grow the movement.
if they don't get it RELEASE FASTER or they
will lead a counter strike behind your back
take your best people and split the group...
and you really will be devastated........
I know exactly how you feel. When you are a passionate person, your feelings run deep. Good or bad. The fresh wound of someone opting out of my email list still burns, and gets me down, and i have to push myself to focus on those that are still opting in. You had 88 good responses and that is monumental! Focus on that. As Patty (Soffer) said - "you are creating impact." When you are doing alot of good, its hard to swallow that some don't get it... but so many have, and so many will. Keep doing what you do. If that one email got you down... all these emails should get you back up and going!
ReplyDeleteYou are doing a great job, and your a Badass and I am looking forward to what ever you have coming next!
...and when you've made such a tremendous impact that reporters will be clamoring to you for a story, that reporter will be left in the dust wondering what the hell happened. And I agree w/Niki - 88 responses is incredibly good! My personal experience didn't involve e-mail, but it involved a client that was so difficult that I allowed him to sap the creativity right out of me. For a long time after that gig, I wouldn't even open my 3dMax, much less do work on it - kinda stupid, considering that a major project I'm preparing a promo pack to get funding for involves quite a bit of 3D modeling and animation. Get back on your horse and ride tall!
ReplyDeletein my previous job (in sales) my mentor said something that i will never forget and i try to remind myself in my own business now of that valuable principle. she said after every no, is a yes, you just have to keep looking for it, the yes is out there just waiting for you to find it. she said do not take the no personal. it's just a stepping stone to your yes. be encouraged, your yes is coming.
ReplyDeleteBeing an artist you learn to grow a thick skin. My last creative breakdown was triggered by my sister trying to be helpful, in the process she did not realize she was tearing down my entire show bit by bit.
ReplyDeletePeople don't always mean to harm, it just happens.
I then focused on her intention and not so much on what she was saying. There is always room to improve, but at some point you must say enough. Good enough is sometimes right where it is.
I made no changes and had a fabulous opening. Sometimes you just need to be your own cheerleader.
